Give to God What Belongs to God

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 22:15–21

This Gospel reading shows a moment when Jesus is confronted by people trying to trap him with a political question: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? They hope to force Jesus into an answer that will either anger the Roman authorities or alienate his own people. Instead, Jesus responds with a wisdom that rises above the trap. Jesus asks for a coin, points to Caesar’s image stamped on it, and says that what bears Caesar’s image should be given to Caesar—but give to God what belongs to God.

This short exchange reveals something deeply spiritual and profoundly practical for us today.

First, Jesus teaches us that faith and daily life are not enemies. We live in the world, with responsibilities, laws, and civic duties. These matter. But they are not the whole story. Beneath all of that is a deeper truth: we are created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27) and we belong to God. God's image is stamped not on coins, but on our hearts, our souls, our very being. No government, job, or social expectation can claim that.

Second, Jesus invites us to examine what we “give” to the world and what we “give” to God. It is easy to let our energy, attention, and identity be consumed by the demands of daily life—work, finances, politics, schedules, and stress. These things have their place, but they cannot define us. God asks for what is God's: our trust, our compassion, our integrity, our prayer, our willingness to love.

Third, Jesus reminds us that our ultimate loyalty is not to any earthly power but to the One who created us. When we remember this, we gain clarity. We can participate in society without losing ourselves. We can engage in the world without being owned by it. We can fulfill our responsibilities while keeping our hearts anchored in God and doing God's will.

In a time when many voices compete for our attention—news, social media, politics, pressures—Jesus’ words invite us to pause and ask: What part of my life am I giving to Caesar, and what part am I giving to God? The Gospel calls us to live responsibly in the world while remembering that our deepest identity and purpose come from the One whose image we bear.

You are invited to reflect about what areas of your life have become so busy or demanding that they overshadow your relationship with God? How can you more intentionally “give to God what belongs to God” in your daily choices, priorities, and relationships?

Lord Jesus,
You see my heart and know the
many responsibilities and concerns I carry each day.
Help me to live faithfully in the
world without losing sight of you.
Teach me to give my time,
my choices, and my heart to the One whose image I bear.
Strengthen me to act with integrity, compassion, and trust,
so that my life
refects your presence.
May all that I do be
rooted in your love.
Amen.
