God's Abundance in Our Ordinary Lives
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 14:13–21 The story of the feeding of the five thousand is one of the most familiar scenes in the Gospel—and one of the most practical. Jesus looks at a hungry crowd, turns to his disciples, and says something surprising: “You give them something to eat.” They respond the way most of us would: “We don’t have enough.” All they can find is a small lunch—five loaves and two fish. It seems laughably inadequate. But Jesus doesn’t ask them for what they don’t have. Jesus asks them to bring what they do have. Jesus blesses what they provided, breaks the bread, and places it back into their hands. Suddenly, what was small becomes more than enough. Everyone eats. Everyone is satisfied. And there are baskets of leftovers. This miracle is not only about bread. It is about the way God works with the ordinary, imperfect, limited things we offer God.
