The Courage to Forgive, the Humility to Serve

Tuesday of the Seventh Week of Easter
John 17:1–11

In this Gospel passage, Jesus speaks honestly about the challenges of discipleship. He names the reality that stumbling blocks will come, that forgiveness will be demanded of us again and again, and that faith—even faith the size of a mustard seed—has power beyond what we imagine. It’s one of those moments where Jesus is both comforting and stretching us at the same time.

The call to forgive repeatedly can feel overwhelming. We know how deeply hurt can settle into the heart, how resentment can take root, and how difficult it is to let go. Yet Jesus invites us to see forgiveness not as a burden but as a pathway to freedom—freedom for the other person, yes, but also freedom for ourselves. Forgiveness loosens the grip of anger and opens space for healing.

Then Jesus shifts the conversation to humility. Jesus reminds his disciples that following him isn’t about earning praise or recognition. It’s about serving with a willing heart, doing what love requires simply because it is good and right. In a world that often celebrates self-promotion, Jesus calls us to a quieter, deeper way of living—one rooted in grace, love, humility, patience, and steady faithfulness.

And tucked within this passage is a beautiful reassurance: even a small amount of faith is enough. We don’t need to be spiritual giants. We simply need to trust that God can work through our imperfect efforts, our hesitant steps, and our desire to grow. Jesus meets us where we are and walks with us as we learn to forgive, to serve, and to trust.

You are invited to reflect today about where is Jesus inviting you to practice forgiveness or let go of something that weighs on your heart? How might you serve more humbly and generously in your daily life this week?

Lord Jesus,
give me the courage to forgive and
the humility to serve with love.
Strengthen my small faith and help me
trust that you are at work in me.
May my life reflect your mercy and
bring healing to those around me.

Amen.
