A Love That Never Stops Reaching Out for Us
One of the most beautiful truths woven throughout Scripture is this: God is always the One who makes the first move toward us. From the opening chapters of Genesis—where God walks in the garden calling out, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9)—to the final words of Revelation inviting us to come and drink freely of the water of life (Revelation 22:17), the story of salvation is the story of a God who continually seeks relationship with God's people.
Jesus makes this divine pursuit unmistakably clear. He tells us, “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love” (John 15:9). God doesn’t simply want our obedience—God wants our hearts. God desires a relationship that is loving, meaningful, and life-giving. Christ is the bridge that makes this relationship possible, and through Jesus' life, teachings, healings, and sacrificial self-giving ministry to others, we see God's longing for us.
And we are not left to sustain this relationship on our own. Jesus promises the Holy Spirit, who comes alongside us as Helper, Advocate, and Guide. “The Holy Spirit… will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). The Spirit empowers us to respond to God’s love, to grow in faith, and to live in a way that reflects the heart of God.
God’s pursuit is gentle but persistent. God reaches for us in prayer, in Scripture, in the sacraments—especially the Eucharist, in the quiet movements of our conscience, through community, and from the love of others. Even when we drift, God continues to draw us back—not with shame or coercion, but with compassion and mercy. God's desire is not to burden us, but to bring us into a loving relationship with God that heals, strengthens, and transforms us into becoming the best versions of ourselves that God intends for us to be.
God's love is not distant. It is ever present, active, and always inviting you to go deeper. As Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20). Open the door of your heart and let Jesus in.
You are invited to reflect about where have you recently sensed God inviting you into deeper trust, healing, or closeness with God? How might you open yourself more fully to the guidance and encouragement of the Holy Spirit in your daily life?
Gracious God,
thank you for loving me with a love that never stops reaching.
Through Christ, you draw me into a relationship
that gives life and hope.
Through the Holy Spirit, you strengthen
and guide me each day.
Help me to recognize your invitations and
to respond with an open and willing heart.
Lead me deeper into your love,
and let that love shape the way I live.
Amen.
