Treasure That Changes Everything

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 13:44–52

Jesus gives us three short images today—a hidden treasure, a pearl of great price, and a fishing net. Each one teaches us something simple and life‑changing about the Kingdom or reign of God.

The first image is of a a person who finds a treasure buried in a field. It is so valuable, so life‑giving, that he joyfully sells everything he owns to buy the field. Jesus is telling us that God’s reign—God's presence, grace, and way of life—is worth more than anything else we could desire or chase. When we truly discover God’s love, our priorities shift. We begin to let go of what doesn’t matter so we can hold onto what does.

The second image of a merchant searching for pearls reminds us that we are all searching for something: security, meaning, peace, belonging. When he finds the one pearl that surpasses all others, he gives up everything to make it his. Jesus invites us to ask: "What am I searching for? And have I recognized the 'pearl' God is offering me—God's love, friendship, guidance, and mercy?"

The third image of the fish caught in the fishing net represent that all people—good and bad—are called to join God's reign. However, just as the fisherman separated the fish caught in the net, God will sort out what is good and what is harmful in God's time and in God's way. This is not meant to frighten us but to remind us that our choices matter. God wants to help us grow into people who choose what is true, good, loving, and life‑giving for ourselves, others, and for God's creation.

These parables invite us to look honestly at our lives. What do we cling to? What do we invest our time, energy, and heart in? Jesus is not asking us to “give up everything” in a dramatic way. Jesus is asking us to let God become the center that guides everything else—our relationships, our work, our worries, our hopes.

When God becomes our treasure, our pearl and our guiding truth, life becomes simpler, clearer, and more joyful. We begin to see what truly matters.

Lord Jesus,
open my eyes to the treasure of your life.
Give me a heart that recognizes your presence
and chooses your way.
Help me let go of whatever keeps me from you,
and fill me with the joy that comes from living in your love.
Be my treasure, my pearl, and my guiding truth.
