Walking the Way of Christ

When Jesus invites us to follow him, he isn’t simply offering a set of rules—he is offering a way of life—"I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). The early Church called this “the Way” (Acts 9:2), a path shaped by living a virtuous life—one centered on God, and expressed in love, humility, goodness, truth, compassion, forgiveness, and selfless service to others. To live a virtuous life is not to strive for perfection on our own, but to allow God to transform us to become the best versions of ourselves that God intends for us.

Jesus shows us what virtue looks like in real, everyday moments. Jesus teaches, “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart” (Matthew 11:29). Gentleness, humility, compassion, courage—these are not abstract ideals. They are the lived character of Christ, offered to us as a pattern for our own lives.

St. Paul describes this beautifully when he writes, “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience"(Colossians 3:12, NRSVCE). Notice the language—clothe yourselves. Virtue is something we put on daily, like a garment. Some days it fits easily; other days it feels like a stretch. But the more we practice, the more natural it becomes.

And we do not walk this path alone. The indwelling Holy Spirit strengthens us from within, shaping our desires and guiding our choices. “Live by the Spirit,” Paul says, “and do not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). The Spirit produces in us the fruit of a virtuous life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity" (CCC, no. 1832; Galatians 5:22–23).

Living the Way of Christ is not about earning God’s love. It is about responding to God's love for us that we already have. It is about letting Christ’s life become visible in our words, our relationships, our daily decisions, and our actions. When we choose forgiveness over resentment, generosity over selfishness, truth over convenience, we are walking Christ's Way.

Small steps matter. Every act of love, every moment of patience, every choice for goodness becomes part of the beautiful and transforming work God is doing in us and through us.

You are invited to reflect about which virtue of Christ do you feel most called to grow in at this moment of your life? What small, practical step can you take now to walk more closely in the Way of Christ?

Lord Jesus,
you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Shape my heart to look more like yours.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, help me to grow in virtue—
choosing love, kindness, humility, and truth in all I do.
Guide my steps each day so that my life reflects
your presence and brings your light to others.
Amen.
