Sent With a Promise
The Solemnity of the Ascension
Matthew 28:16–20
The scene on the mountain in Galilee is both simple and profound. The disciples gather where Jesus told them to go. Some worship. Some doubt. And Jesus meets them all—right there, in their mixture of faith and uncertainty.
Before giving any command, Jesus offers reassurance: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” In other words, You’re not stepping into this mission alone or unprepared. I am the One who sends you, and I am the One who strengthens you.
Then comes the Great Commission—Go, make disciples, baptize, teach. These are not tasks reserved for experts or perfect believers. They are invitations for ordinary people—people like the disciples, people like us—to share the love we’ve received. We do this through kindness, through witness, through the way we live our faith in daily life.
And Jesus ends with one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture:
“I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Not sometimes. Not only when we feel strong. Always.
This passage reminds us that every Christian life is both a gift and a mission. We are loved, and we are sent. We are guided, and we are accompanied. Wherever we go—into our homes, workplaces, relationships, and communities—Christ goes with us, empowering us to be signs of his presence in the world.
You are invited to reflect today about where is Jesus inviting you to “go” in your daily life—who might need encouragement, compassion, or witness from you? How can you lean more deeply into Jesus’ promise, “I am with you always,” especially in moments of doubt or hesitation?
Lord Jesus,
you send me into the world with love and purpose.
Strengthen my heart, calm my fears,
and help me trust that you walk with me in every moment.
May my words and actions reflect your presence,
and may I share your hope wherever I am.
Amen.
