Seeing the Father in the Face of Jesus

Memorial of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
John 14:7–14

There’s a beautiful honesty in Philip’s request: “Show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” It’s the kind of longing many of us carry—a desire for clarity, reassurance, something unmistakably divine to steady our faith. Jesus responds not with frustration, but with a tender invitation to look again: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

In this moment, Jesus reveals something profound: God is not distant, abstract, or hidden behind layers of mystery. The Father’s heart, compassion, mercy, and desire for our flourishing are fully revealed in Jesus. If we want to know what God is like, we look at Jesus—his patience with the confused, his gentleness with the wounded, his courage in the face of injustice, his unwavering love.

Jesus goes even further. He tells the disciples that his words and works flow from the Father dwelling in him. And then Jesus extends an astonishing promise: those who believe in him will do the works he does—and even greater ones. Not because we are powerful, but because Jesus' life continues through us. Jesus' return to the Father opens the way for his Spirit to work in and through ordinary people doing extraordinary acts of love.

Finally, Jesus assures us that whatever we ask in his name—meaning whatever aligns with his heart, his mission, his love—he will do. Prayer, then, is not about convincing God but about joining ourselves to the life and love already flowing from the Father through Jesus.

This passage invites us to trust that God is closer than we think, that Jesus' presence is the clearest window into the Father’s love, and that our lives, united with Jesus, can become instruments of grace in the world.

You are invited to reflect today about where in your life are you being invited to see the Father’s love more clearly through the person and actions of Jesus? How might Jesus be calling you to participate in his works of compassion, healing, or reconciliation in your daily relationships?

Lord Jesus, you reveal the Father’s heart with every word
you speak and every act of love you offer.
Open my eyes to recognize the Father’s presence
in you, and open my heart to trust your promises.
Help me to live in a way that reflects your
compassion and brings your light to others.
Draw me deeper into your life so that all
I do may glorify the Father.
Amen.
