Remain in Me and Live

Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter
John 15:1–8

Jesus’ image of the vine and branches is one of the most comforting and challenging teachings in the Gospel. It’s comforting because it reminds us that we are never meant to navigate life on our own. We are connected—intimately, lovingly—to Jesus, the true vine. Our strength, our growth, our fruitfulness all flow from that relationship. And it’s challenging because Jesus is honest: without him, we wither. Without Jesus, we lose the very life that sustains us.

In this passage, Jesus speaks about pruning. Anyone who has tended a plant knows pruning can look harsh—cutting away branches, trimming back growth. But pruning is always for the sake of life. Jesus tells us God prunes every fruitful branch “so that it bears more fruit.” Sometimes the pruning in our lives comes through change, loss, correction, or the quiet nudge of the Spirit inviting us to let go of what no longer leads us toward love. It’s not punishment; it’s care. It’s God shaping us into people who reflect God's heart more clearly.

Then Jesus gives the heart of the message: “Remain in me, as I remain in you.” This is not a one-time decision but a daily posture. Remaining in Jesus means returning to him again and again—through prayer, through the sacraments, through acts of love, through choosing forgiveness, through seeking truth. It means allowing Jesus' words to take root in us so deeply that they shape how we see, speak, and act.

And the promise is beautiful: when we remain in Jesus, our lives bear fruit—fruit that blesses others, fruit that glorifies God, fruit that lasts. Not because we are impressive, but because God's life flows through us.

This Gospel invites us to rest in Jesus, to trust the gentle pruning of God, and to remember that our deepest purpose is found in staying close to the One who gives us life.

You are invited to reflect today about what helps you stay connected to Jesus in a real and daily way? Where might God be gently “pruning” your life so that you can grow in love, patience, or faithfulness?

Lord Jesus,
you are the true vine, and I am a branch held in your love.
Help me remain in you each day.
Give me the courage to accept God's pruning and the
grace to bear fruit that reflects your goodness.
Keep me close to your heart,
and let your life flow through mine.
Amen.
