Not of this World, but Sent Into It
Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter
John 15:18–21
Jesus speaks very honestly in this passage—words that are not meant to frighten us, but to prepare and strengthen us. “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.” These are not easy words to hear. Most of us want to be liked, understood, and welcomed. Yet Jesus reminds us that following him sometimes puts us at odds with the values, expectations, and pressures of the world around us.
When Jesus speaks of “the world,” he isn’t talking about creation or humanity. Jesus is talking about the mindset that resists God’s love—selfishness, pride, injustice, and the refusal to be transformed. When we choose compassion over convenience, forgiveness over resentment, truth over comfort, we may find ourselves misunderstood or even rejected. Jesus wants us to know that this is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of belonging to him.
Jesus tells us, “You do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world.” That is not a rejection of the world, but a mission for it. We are chosen to bring God's light into places where love is lacking, where hope is thin, where people feel unseen. And yes, that sometimes means standing firm when it would be easier to blend in.
Jesus also reminds us that the resistance we face is not really about us—it is about him. “They will do all these things to you on account of my name.” In other words, when we experience pushback for living our faith, we are sharing in Jesus' life, his mission, and even his courage.
This passage is not a warning as much as it is a reassurance: you are not alone. Jesus has walked this path before you. He walks it with you now. And Jesus strengthens you to be a quiet, steady witness of his love in a world that desperately needs it.
You are invited to reflect today about when have you felt tension between living your faith and fitting in with the expectations of the world around you? How might Jesus be inviting you to stand with him more courageously, gently, or faithfully in your daily life?
Lord Jesus,
you know what it is to be misunderstood and rejected.
Give me the courage to follow you with a faithful heart,
even when it is difficult.
Strengthen me with your love, guide me with your Spirit,
and help me bring your light into the world with humility and hope.
Amen.
