Blessed in the Hidden Acts of Love
Thursday of the Fourth Week of Easter
John 13:16–20
In this short but powerful passage, Jesus speaks right after washing the disciples’ feet—a moment already overflowing with humility, tenderness, and self-giving love. Jesus tells them, “No slave is greater than his master, nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.” It’s Jesus' gentle way of saying, "If I, your Lord, have chosen the path of humble service, then this is the path of true discipleship for you as well."
What’s striking is how Jesus connects service with blessing. Jesus doesn’t say, “If you understand these things, blessed are you.” He says, “If you do them.” The blessing is not in the knowing but in the living—in the quiet, often unnoticed acts of kindness, forgiveness, patience, and generosity that shape the heart of a disciple.
Jesus also acknowledges that not everyone will receive him, and not everyone will understand his mission. Yet Jesus remains faithful, steady, and open-hearted. Jesus reminds the disciples that welcoming his messengers is the same as welcoming him—and welcoming him is welcoming the Father. In other words, every act of love, every gesture of service, every moment of compassion becomes a doorway through which God’s presence enters the world.
This passage invites us to reflect on the kind of discipleship that doesn’t seek attention or reward. It’s the discipleship of the towel and basin—the willingness to humbly serve quietly, faithfully, and joyfully. It’s the discipleship that believes God is present in the small things, the hidden things, the everyday things.
And Jesus promises: "You will be blessed when you live this way." Not necessarily with ease or applause, but with the deep, steady joy that comes from loving as Jesus loves.
You are invited to reflect today about what simple, concrete act of humble service is Jesus inviting you to embrace more intentionally this week? How can you become more aware of God’s presence in the small, hidden acts of love that fill your daily life?
Lord Jesus,
you show me the way of humble service and
invite me to follow with a willing heart.
Teach me to love in the small, quiet ways
that reflect your own tenderness.
Help me to welcome you in others and to be a
sign of your presence wherever I go.
Bless my efforts to serve, and shape
my heart to look more like yours. Amen.
Amen.
