Walking Towards the Father's House

Friday of the Fourth Week of Lent
John 7:1–2, 10, 25–30

There’s a quiet tension running through today’s Gospel. Jesus moves about cautiously because the religious leaders are seeking to kill him. The crowds whisper, wonder, and debate who Jesus really is. And in the middle of all this noise, Jesus speaks with a calm clarity about the Father: “I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

That single line cuts through the confusion. Jesus isn’t driven by fear, pressure, or public opinion. Jesus is anchored in his relationship with the Father. Everything Jesus does flows from that identity and mission. Even when others misunderstand Jesus—or threaten him—Jesus keeps walking toward doing the Father’s will, step by steady step.

Lent invites us into that same kind of clarity. We all know what it feels like to be pulled in different directions: expectations from others, old habits that tug at us, fears that whisper in the background. Sometimes we even hide parts of ourselves because we’re afraid of being judged or rejected.

But Jesus shows us another way. Jesus moves forward not because the path is easy, but because Jesus knows who he belongs to. Jesus' “hour” has not yet come, so nothing—not even hostility—can derail Jesus' purpose.

This Gospel gently asks us: What would change if we lived from that same rootedness? What if our choices, our reactions, our hopes, and even our struggles were grounded in the truth that we are sent, loved, and held by God?

Lent isn’t about gritting our teeth and trying harder. It’s about letting God remind us who we are—and allowing that truth to shape how we walk through the world. When we know where we come from and who sends us, we can face uncertainty with courage, criticism with peace, and daily life with renewed purpose.

You are invited to reflect today about where in your life do you feel pulled by fear, pressure, or the expectations of others, and how might God be inviting you to walk with greater freedom? What helps you stay rooted in your identity as God’s beloved, especially when life feels noisy or confusing?

Lord Jesus,
You walked with courage because you knew the Father’s love.
Anchor my heart in that same love.
Help me trust your timing, follow your voice,
and walk each day with the freedom
of one who is sent by God.
Amen.
