Staying Rooted in God

Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent
John 10:31–42

There’s a quiet but powerful thread running through this Gospel passage: Jesus stands in the middle of hostility, accusation, and misunderstanding, yet Jesus remains utterly grounded in who he is and in the mission the Father has entrusted to him. The crowd is ready to stone Jesus, not because of anything he has done, but because his very identity unsettles them.

Jesus doesn’t react with fear or anger. He responds with clarity, calm, and a steady confidence rooted in his relationship with God. Jesus knows that no amount of misunderstanding or rejection can separate him from God's love. That confidence allows Jesus to stand firm even when others turn against him and to continue to reveal God's heart—patiently, consistently, and lovingly.

What's striking is that Jesus doesn't force belief. He simply invites: “If you do not believe me, believe the works.” In other words, look at the fruit. Look at the goodness. Look at what God is doing right in front of you.

Then comes the quiet miracle of the passage: Jesus withdraws across the Jordan, and there other people come to him. Away from the noise and hostility, hearts open. Faith grows. People recognize the truth because of the steady witness of Jesus's life and his love for them.

There’s something deeply comforting here for us. We all face moments when we feel misunderstood, judged, or pushed aside. We all know what it’s like to have our intentions questioned or our faith challenged. Jesus shows us that our strength doesn’t come from winning arguments or proving ourselves. It comes from staying rooted in God—remaining faithful, steady, and grounded in God's love.

Sometimes the most powerful witness we can offer is simply to keep doing the good God has placed in front of us. The fruit will speak for itself. And when we feel worn down or discouraged, Jesus reminds us that there is always a place of refuge “across the Jordan”—a space of prayer, quiet, and renewal, with a supportive community, and where we can remember who we are and whose we are.

You are invited to reflect today about where in your life are you feeling misunderstood, challenged, or discouraged, and how might Jesus be inviting you to remain grounded in him rather than reacting out of fear or frustration? What “good works” in your life—acts of kindness, faithfulness, or service—might God be using to speak to others more powerfully than your words ever could?

Lord Jesus,
when I feel overwhelmed or misunderstood, draw me close to you.
Help me stay rooted in the Father’s love and remain steady in
the mission you’ve entrusted to me.
May my life reflect your goodness in quiet,
faithful ways that open hearts to your presence.
Hold me in your peace today.
Amen.
