"Led by the Spirit"

First Sunday of Lent
Matthew 4:1-11

Every Lent begins in the desert. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is led by the Spirit into a quiet, lonely place where he fasts, prays, and faces temptation. This moment comes right after his baptism, reminding us that the desert is not a punishment—it is part of preparation. The desert is where hearts are clarified and faith is strengthened.

Jesus is tempted in very human ways. He is hungry, tired, and vulnerable. The tempter invites him to take shortcuts, to put himself first, to seek power and recognition. Each time, Jesus responds by trusting God’s word instead of giving in to fear or desire. He shows us that temptation is not a failure. What matters is how we respond.

Lent invites us into our own desert experience—not necessarily a place, but a way of living more simply and honestly, with our hearts and minds centered on God. Through fasting, prayer, and small sacrifices, we create space to notice what pulls us away from God. The desert helps us see what we rely on too much and where we need to grow in trusting God.

This Gospel also brings comfort. Jesus does not face temptation alone, and neither do we. God’s Spirit leads him, and angels care for him at the end. When Lent feels difficult or uncomfortable, we can remember that God is present with us in the struggle. The desert is where God meets us, strengthens us, and prepares us for new life.

Practically, this week might be a good time to choose one small Lenten practice and commit to it with patience. It could be setting aside time for quiet prayer, limiting distractions, or letting go of a habit that drains your spirit. Lent is not about doing everything at once. It is about trusting in God and allowing the Spirit to lead us to respond with love, faith, and hope one step at a time.

As we begin this holy season, Jesus reminds us that saying “no” to temptation helps us say “yes” to God. The desert may feel empty at first, but it is there that God fills us with what truly satisfies.

You are invited to reflect today about what “temptation” or distraction most pulls you away from trusting God? How is God inviting you to simplify your life during this Lenten season?

Lord Jesus,
you know my weaknesses and my struggles.
Walk with me in the desert of my life.
Give me strength to resist temptation,
courage to trust God’s word,
and a heart open to your renewal.
May this season lead me closer to you
and prepare me for new life.
Amen.
