We best evidence our love of our God by the love we give to one another. "Those who say, 'I love God,' and hate their brothers and sisters,' are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters' also" (1 John 4:20).
Many believe that Jesus is the model for our life's journey, calling us to follow in his footsteps by striving with a pure heart and spirit to be faithful to God’s will: to be loving, virtuous, truthful, kind, caring, prayerful, humble, life giving, inviting, welcoming, inclusive, communal, courageous, just, peaceful, non-violent, a healer, joyous, kind, patient, merciful, forgiving, compassionate, and by freely giving ourselves in selfless, sacrificial, and loving service to others.
No doubt there are others who have also exemplified or modeled all or some of these virtues, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Dorothy Day, and many others throughout history, both remembered and forgotten. Despite the absence of routinely reporting such "ordinary" actions by others as not being "newsworthy," there are many, many untold stories of people who join these "saints" in seeking to live virtuous lives everyday, in their own spheres of influence, in loving service to others and of God's creation. We are each called to do no less with the many and divergent gifts, talents, resources, and other blessings entrusted to us.
The journey is not easy. It may have many detours, setbacks, and roadblocks along the way. We are not alone, for we walk with others. What we are called to do may sometimes seem impossible, "but for God all things are possible" (Matt 19:26). It is a journey that continues throughout our entire lifetime and beyond. It is a journey worthy of our total and faithful commitment — for the reward is an abundant and eternal life with our God. "[Jesus] came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10).
