Are You Aware and Living an Intentional Life?

How much of what you think, say, or do is intentional? How much is habitual? How much is driven by your judgmental reactions to others or things based on your preconditioned thoughts or emotions? Are you in control of your thoughts, words, and actions or are they in control of you? Do you experience the present moment of reality as it is, not as you expect or desire it to be? Do you see others as they really are, not as you want them to be? Do you see the inherent dignity of another person without comparing them with some preconceived standard or expectation created in your mind?

Do you take time daily to reflect on your thoughts, words, and actions that occurred during the day? One resource for doing this is through the practice of The Daily Examen, a modification of the Examen practice described by St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises. The Daily Examen

is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern [God's] direction for us. The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience.

You can use the Examen Prayer Card to guide you in the five movements of the Examen that is usually prayed at the end of the day, before you go to sleep. Some find it helpful to also pray the Examen again at mid-day. You can find more information and other variations of The Examen Prayer at "The Daily Examen."
